TOTAL BEGINNER SKATEBOARDING – FAQ

We recommend 5 years of age as the ideal starting point for children beginning skate lessons. At this age, most children have developed the ability to stand still, listen to instructions,

and maintain focus, which are important skills for participating safely and effectively in a coached environment.

They begin in a controlled and structured learning environment, where coaches focus on building confidence, balance, and coordination. Progression is introduced gradually, allowing

children to develop the core fundamentals of skateboarding at a comfortable pace.

By taking this step-by-step approach, young athletes gain a strong technical foundation and the confidence required to progress through the different skill levels of our program.

For most beginners:

  • Ages 5–7 → 7.25"–8.0" deck
  • Ages 8–12 → 7.5"–8.125" deck
  • Teens → 8.0" + deck
  • Adults → 8.5" + deck

Important: Avoid department store boards. They're heavy, hard to turn, and make learning frustrating. We can set up a board for you in our store

Yes — especially in the early stages.

We strongly recommend:

  • Helmet
  • Wrist guards
  • Knee pads
  • Elbow pads

Pads build confidence. When kids or Adults aren't afraid to fall, they progress faster.

Like any sport — football, baseball, gymnastics — there is risk.

The difference is structure. In public skateparks, kids mix with advanced skaters and no coaching. That's where most issues happen.

No.

Our beginner program teaches:

  • How to stand on the board
  • How to push correctly
  • How to stop safely
  • How to fall properly

We assume zero experience.

Flat-soled shoes (Vans-style are ideal), comfortable athletic clothing, no sandals, and hair tied back if long.

Skate-specific shoes help with grip and board control, but they don't need anything expensive to begin.

Most beginners can:

  • Ride confidently within 1–3 sessions
  • Drop in on small ramps within a few weeks
  • Learn their first tricks (like a shove-it) within 4–8 weeks

Progress depends on consistency, coaching, and confidence. This is why we encourage 8 week coaching

Completely normal.

Skateboarding builds confidence because it teaches controlled risk, falling and getting back up, and patience.

We never force tricks. We build skill layers so kids feel safe before progressing.

Absolutely.

Skateboarding develops balance, coordination, lower body strength, mobility, and mental resilience.

Unlike many traditional sports, it is also individual progression-based, creative, and Olympic pathway recognized. We have developed Olympic Gold Medalist Arisa Trew from a beginner

Most kids practice. We train.

LVLUP follows structured progression systems: skill breakdown, coach feedback, repetition cycles, and safety progression.

We don't just supervise skating — we develop athletes and confident kids.
